The Technical of CSD Marine Transformers: Materials, Design, and Standards
How is a CSD marine transformer different from a standard transformer? The core distinctions lie in three aspects: core material, insulation structure, and compliance certification.
First, the core is typically laminated from high-permeability, low-loss cold-rolled silicon steel sheets. This material effectively reduces no-load losses and enhances energy efficiency. Meanwhile, the step-lap joint process minimizes magnetic reluctance vibration, ensuring low noise and low heat generation even when the ship’s load fluctuates. This is not a hidden “black technology” but rather a mature industrial design based on electromagnetic principles, balancing efficiency and durability.
Secondly, the insulation system must meet the demanding conditions of the marine environment. According to the national standard GB/T 22194-2008 Electrical Installations in Ships—Transformers, marine transformers must achieve an insulation class of F or higher. The windings are wrapped with high-temperature-resistant polyester film and fully impregnated with solvent-free varnish to enhance moisture and corrosion resistance. This design eliminates the need for an "oil tank" structure, making it safer, more environmentally friendly, and better suited to dusty and humid port environments.
Most importantly, CSD marine transformers must obtain authoritative industry certifications. For instance, CB/T 4388-2013 Marine Dry-Type Transformers specifies their technical parameters and testing methods, while GJB 621A-99 General Specifications for Military Ship Transformers represents an even higher standard of reliability. These standards are not merely the baseline for product qualification but also crucial criteria for shipowners when evaluating suppliers. In practice, some ports have experienced issues such as incompatible shore power connections and unstable power supply due to the use of non-compliant transformers, which ultimately increased operational costs. This demonstrates that compliance is not just empty rhetoric on paper but a fundamental requirement for ensuring reliable operations.
